One Week, Zero Meat: Delicious Recipes For Meat Free Week
by Chiara Micallef
Meat Free Week will take place this month between the 5th and 11th of October. We at Yellow have decided to compile a list of delicious recipes for you to try out – but first, let's talk a bit about Meat Free Week.
What's Meat Free Week?
Meat Free Week is well, to put it simply, one week where you do not consume any meat-based products. Its aim is to safeguard and promote biodiversity and to counter climate change.
Why should you do it?
Climate change
Meat production is one of the highest greenhouse gas emitting industries in the world. The meat industry is instrumental to land and water degradation, and deforestation – making it a direct contributor to global warming.
It lessens animal cruelty
Since meat is generally mass-produced, animals like cows, pigs and chickens have to live in tiny, overcrowded spaces – with no room to move around or stretch their limbs, this increases the chances of disease, injury and infection.
Most times, they are not even given access to daylight or fresh air – forever.
It's also good for your health… And pocket
A study carried out by Oxford University in 2019 states that eating high amounts of red and processed meats may increase the risk of bowel cancer. Eating meat-based products every day can also have a toll on your heart, weight, cholesterol levels, waistline – and finances.
