There are few experiences as simple yet as magical as watching the sun set over the Mediterranean Sea. Thanks to its position in the centre of the Mediterranean and its many west-facing coastlines, Malta offers some truly spectacular sunset views.

From towering cliffs to peaceful bays and scenic hilltop villages, the Maltese islands provide countless spots where the day ends with a breathtaking display of colours across the sky. Whether you prefer a quiet coastal walk or a dramatic cliffside view, these locations offer some of the most unforgettable sunsets Malta and Gozo have to offer.

1. Dingli Cliffs

Dingli Cliffs are widely considered one of the most iconic sunset locations in Malta. Located along the island's western coastline near the village of Dingli, these limestone cliffs rise more than 250 metres above sea level, making them the highest point on the island.

From the edge of the cliffs, visitors can enjoy uninterrupted views across the Mediterranean, with the small uninhabited island of Filfla, which sits several kilometres offshore. As the sun slowly sinks below the horizon, the sky transforms into shades of orange, pink and deep red, creating a dramatic backdrop against the rugged cliffs. A popular viewpoint is located near the small Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene, where a peaceful walking path allows visitors to take in the panoramic views of the coastline and surrounding countryside.

Why Dingli Cliffs Is Special:

  • Highest natural viewpoint in Malta
  • Uninterrupted Mediterranean horizon
  • Quiet countryside atmosphere

2. Golden Bay Cliffs

Golden Bay is one of Malta's most popular beaches, and it is also one of the best places on the island to watch the sunset. Situated on the north-western coast, the bay faces directly towards the open sea, offering a perfect view as the sun disappears beyond the horizon.

The surrounding cliffs provide elevated viewpoints overlooking the golden sandy beach below. As evening approaches, the sky reflects warm colours across the water while the cliffs and surrounding landscape are bathed in golden light.

Many visitors spend the afternoon swimming or relaxing on the beach before staying to enjoy the sunset, making Golden Bay a lively yet beautiful spot to end the day.

Why Golden Bay Cliffs is Special

  • One of Malta's few sandy beaches
  • Wide open sea views
  • Easy access and facilities nearby

Located on Malta's south-western coast near Siġġiewi, Għar Lapsi is a small rocky inlet known for its crystal-clear waters and dramatic coastal scenery. Although it is popular among divers and snorkelling enthusiasts during the day, the area becomes particularly peaceful in the evening. The natural rock formations surrounding the inlet create a stunning frame for the sunset, while the calm waters reflect the changing colours of the sky. From the shoreline, visitors can also see the island of Filfla on the horizon, adding to the spectacular view.

Because it is slightly more secluded than other beaches, Għar Lapsi offers a quieter and more relaxed sunset experience.

Why Għar Lapsi is Special

  • Hidden bay atmosphere
  • Dramatic rocky coastline
  • Excellent reflections at sunset

Surrounded by steep cliffs and a small harbour lined with restaurants and cafés, the bay offers a charming seaside atmosphere. For the best views, visitors can walk up towards the historic Xlendi Tower, where elevated paths provide sweeping views of the bay and the open sea beyond. As the sun sets behind the cliffs, the harbour gradually lights up while the sky fills with warm Mediterranean colours.

The combination of natural beauty, historic surroundings and seaside dining makes Xlendi one of the most romantic sunset spots in Gozo.

Why Xlendi Bay is Special:

A Daily Spectacle

Malta's sunsets are among the most beautiful natural spectacles the islands have to offer. Sometimes, the best way to experience Malta is simply to pause, find a quiet spot by the sea, and watch the sun slowly disappear into the Mediterranean.
