Business Overview
Farmers' Central Cooperative Society Ltd is Malta's largest fruit and vegetable cooperative. We work with over 800 local farmers who bring fresh produce to tables across the island. From our base at the Pitkali Centre in Ta' Qali, we connect farming communities with customers who want quality, freshness, and locally grown food.
Our story started in 1947, right after World War II ended. The Zabbar Farmers' Cooperative became Malta's first cooperative when local farmers saw the benefits of working together. They faced food shortages and uncertain markets during difficult times. By joining forces, they could buy supplies at better prices and get fair rates for their crops. This spirit of cooperation spread quickly as farmers from other regions saw the success and joined in.
Today, seven cooperatives work together as one. Farmers from Dingli, Mgarr, Qormi, Rabat, St. Paul's Bay, Siggiewi Zebbug, and Zabbar unite under our organization. Each area brings special Read Morestrengths based on local conditions and the crops they grow best. Together, these farmers sell over 50% of all products at the Pitkali Markets, creating 12 million euros in sales each year.
Malta's Mediterranean climate is perfect for growing different produce all year round. Our farmers grow many vegetables like tomatoes, potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, peppers, cucumbers, melons, artichokes, onions, garlic, carrots, lettuce, cabbage, and spinach. They also grow fresh fruits including oranges, mandarins, strawberries, figs, grapes, melons, watermelons, and pomegranates. Everything travels less than 50 kilometers from field to market. This short distance means maximum freshness and quality when it reaches your table.
The seasons shape what grows and when. Winter brings cauliflower, broccoli, artichokes, citrus fruits, fennel, and broad beans. Spring delivers peas, asparagus, early potatoes, strawberries, and fresh herbs. Summer produces tomatoes, melons, watermelons, grapes, peaches, and plums. Autumn brings pomegranates, figs, and winter vegetables. Some crops stay available all year through smart planning.
Potatoes are especially important in Maltese farming and cooking. The harvest runs from late March through early June. Farmers hand pick each potato to protect the delicate skin. This careful method creates better quality than machines can achieve. Malta ships over 6,000 tons of potatoes to other countries each year. This shows how good our farmers are. Tomatoes thrive in summer. Some go fresh to market. Others become traditional products like kunserva paste and sun dried tomatoes.
The Pitkali Centre is where everything comes together. Our facilities include four trading areas, offices, and a hall for events. The Malta Food Agency oversees operations using an electronic system that tracks every delivery. When farmers arrive each morning with fresh harvests, staff scan and record each load. This creates transparency that helps everyone. The technology keeps things accountable while moving produce quickly to maintain peak freshness.
We serve two different customer groups well. Local families visit the Ta' Qali Farmers Market on Tuesdays and Saturdays. They buy produce at good prices straight from farming families. Walking through colorful stalls filled with just picked vegetables and tree ripened fruits offers something supermarkets cannot match. Hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, grocers, and street vendors buy larger amounts from us. Our direct farm to market system cuts out middlemen. This lowers costs and makes sure farmers get fair pay.
Freshness makes us different from other options. Farmers harvest crops in the morning and bring them to the Pitkali Centre the same day. Many items arrive within hours of leaving the field. Buyers purchase quickly, and products move to shops while still at peak quality. This speed keeps flavor, texture, and nutrition at their best. Vitamins and minerals stay at highest levels when the time between harvest and eating stays short. Colors look brighter, flavors taste stronger, and everything feels crisp in ways imported produce cannot match.
We take sustainability seriously. The SYNECO project shows our commitment to protecting the environment. We work with pig breeders and milk producers. Malta creates 300,000 tons of animal waste every year. With European Union funding, we developed mobile equipment that turns this waste into useful resources. The system makes clean energy while processing slurry to recover 80% as clean water for watering crops. The rest becomes organic fertilizer. This approach cuts chemical fertilizer costs and helps the environment.
Traditional farming knowledge works with modern tools in what we do. Maltese farmers have carved terraced fields into hillsides for generations. These fields stop erosion and make the most of limited land. Special irrigation techniques use Malta's limestone to hold water. Roots can reach this moisture naturally. These proven methods now combine with GPS mapping, weather monitoring, soil testing, and crop management software.
Buying local makes Malta's food supply stronger and more secure. The island brings in about 75% of the food people eat. This makes local farming very important for everyone. Most farms are small family businesses under 2 hectares. Families have passed these farms down through generations. They know their land deeply. When you buy from us, your money helps these families. It also keeps farming knowledge and rural areas alive for the future.
Teaching extends what we do beyond just selling. We go on television and radio to explain local farming practices and what grows when. School children visit to see how food goes from seed to table. Tourist groups learn about Malta's farming history. These efforts help people understand and value local food.
Manager Joe Cassar leads our experienced team with real understanding of farm life. He has been part of the Qormi cooperative since 1994 and joined our committee in 2008. He builds good relationships through regular talk and working together to solve problems. His focus on new technology and modern methods while keeping cooperative values has helped us handle 75 years of changing markets, weather, and what customers want.
