Business Overview
Coop Services Ltd is Malta's leading passenger transport cooperative. The company was established in 1989 as a minibus cooperative and rebranded to Coop Services Ltd in 1999. Its mission is to serve the general public by improving one of the most essential aspects of daily life: getting from one place to another. The cooperative is guided by principles of solidarity, social responsibility, and honesty. These values shape how the company operates and set it apart from conventional transport providers. Today, over 80 per cent of transport operators across Malta are proud members of the cooperative.
The scale of the operation is one of its defining strengths. The company runs the largest public transport fleet in Malta, with over 400 vehicles under direct management. A further 200 vehicles are subcontracted to meet higher demand, ensuring every booking is fulfilled. In 2019, Coop Services moved to a dedicated logistics centre in Qormi, on Read Morethe main thoroughfare of the Marsa Hamrun bypass. The facility was built to support the full scope of the company's operations. The fleet is updated regularly, with new technologies added to improve safety, comfort, and sustainability. In 2024, the company launched a further series of sustainability initiatives as part of its commitment to responsible operations.
Coop Services provides transport across three core areas: school students, the general public, and clients requiring private charters. Private charters range from daily contracted transport for large organisations to group bookings for events, trips, and special occasions. All services are held to the same standard. The cooperative does not tier its service. Every client is served with the same care, the same vehicles, and the same trained drivers, regardless of the size or nature of the booking. Vehicles are regularly maintained and safety tested at the company's own mechanical workshops in Qormi.
School transport is at the heart of what Coop Services does. The company manages approximately a third of all state school transport in Malta and Gozo. It also handles nearly half of all school transport outside the state sector. Both figures have been confirmed by the Government of Malta's Ministry for Education. In 2023, Sagalytics published independent research on the school transport service. It found that 87.5 per cent of parents and legal guardians rated the service as satisfactory or very satisfactory. A further 91.55 per cent were satisfied or very satisfied with driver punctuality. These are independently verified results, not internal estimates.
Schools across Malta and Gozo have trusted Coop Services for many years. Bernie Mizzi, Director of Chiswick House School and St. Martin's College, has worked with the company for over 35 years. He notes that child safety has always been the priority in that relationship. He has publicly endorsed Coop Services as a trustworthy and professional company. The company has transported thousands of students safely across the island over those years, including on school outings and educational trips. His endorsement, based on direct experience spanning more than three decades, carries real weight.
The private charter service applies the same standards to a wider range of clients. Malta Freeport Terminals has been a charter client for many years. Coop Services coordinates daily transport for port workers across complex routes with multiple collection points. Schedules are strict and the logistics are demanding. The company covers this arrangement every day, across multiple routes and within tight time windows. Alex Montebello, CEO of Malta Freeport Terminals, has publicly praised Coop Services for its dependability and professionalism, noting that the service remains consistent even under difficult conditions.
Sporting and cultural events are another area where the private charter service is regularly relied upon. The Aquatic Sports Association of Malta has worked with Coop Services on several international events. The company managed transport for athletes, coaches, and delegations, moving groups between accommodation and competition venues. David Bonello, Vice President of the association, has praised the service for its punctuality, flexibility, and attention to detail. He noted that operations ran smoothly even when the schedule was demanding and conditions were difficult.
Guest and visitor transport is a further area where the company has demonstrated its reliability. Yippie Malta, operated by Cominology Ltd, uses Coop Services for regular scheduled guest transport. Managing Director Sandro Ciliberti has praised the professional drivers, the comfort of the vehicles, and the smooth logistics behind each journey. The consistency of the service across such different client types reflects the discipline that comes with managing an operation of this scale.
The Qormi logistics hub underpins all of this. The facility spans 980 square metres per floor. It houses mechanical workshops, spare parts storage, logistical coordination halls, a boardroom, and a garage across multiple levels. Scheduling, dispatch, maintenance, and safety checks all run from a single location. This means problems are identified and fixed quickly. No vehicle enters service without passing the required checks.
As a cooperative, Coop Services is guided by values that go beyond running a transport business. The organisation is committed to solidarity, social responsibility, and genuine concern for the communities it serves. The company supports Puttinu Cares twice a year, through an annual Christmas donation and a fundraiser held during Holy Week. It also backs the Duke of Edinburgh Award, Badminton Malta, Inhobb il Futbol, and the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta. Community involvement is not an optional extra for Coop Services. It is woven into the structure and purpose of the cooperative itself. In 2025, Coop Services joins cooperatives across Malta and around the world in marking the United Nations International Year of Cooperatives. The initiative runs under the theme Cooperatives Build a Better World.
Coop Services Ltd has built its reputation over more than 35 years through consistent, professional transport across Malta. The Government of Malta, Malta Freeport Terminals, national sporting bodies, and schools and sporting associations across the Maltese islands have all endorsed the company publicly and consistently. Every journey it handles, large or small, is managed to the same standard. To discuss a chauffeur service or private transport requirement in Malta, contact Coop Services Ltd directly today.
