It is important to be detail-oriented

If you are not detail-oriented you might want to pursue another kind of job as when it comes to electrical and mechanical design attention to detail is very important to make sure that the end result is perfect. The attention to detail has to start from the moment that you purchase the materials, tools and items, so that you make sure you purchase high quality materials that will work well together and will in the end provide you with a finished result that can withstand the test of time. You will also have peace of mind in knowing that what you have built is also safe.

Failure to evaluate items

Should you take for granted any item that you are using and fail to evaluate the quality even of the smallest thing, can prove to be of catastrophic consequence. There is no space for 'good enough' or 'fine' when it comes to electrical and mechanical design. Anything that is 'good enough' or 'fine' can create serious damage to an establishment or worse, get someone seriously injured or killed. It is far better to take a few extra minutes or hours to make sure that something is up to par with regulations and in perfect shape, rather than having to face the consequences of what might happen if you don't.

Understand what you are working on

You should never work on something that you do not truly understand. Do not just copy a plan without fully understanding what went on during the preparation and what decisions were taken when it was planned. You could find yourself in serious trouble if you start modifying a plan that you do not really understand or that you did not work on. In this case you should read the specifications and understand them fully and you should not start working on anything before that happens.

Working fast vs working on detail

Many might think that they need to work fast in order to provide their client with a better service. They think that time defines professionalism, when in reality their client will be very much disappointed with work that is done fast instead of right. While you are planning you need to learn to take everything into consideration so that you do not miss anything before you start any work.

No man is an island

When it comes to mechanical and electrical design an extra pair of eyes and hands is always welcome. It is just like proofreading, others might catch a mistake that you might not and that can make all the difference when it comes to the building stage. Learning to work as part of a team can be essential in this line of work. You should also be upfront with any feedback and also be prepared to receive it for better results. These two skills can be the difference between a successful project or a tragedy waiting to happen.
