Being a pet owner is amazing – but it also takes up a lot of your time and responsibility.

Whether you're already a pet owner, or if you're planning on introducing a new cat or dog to your home, this article can help you provide them with a happy and healthy life.

1. Provide a balanced diet

If you are providing a varied diet to your pet, you don't really need to present them with any additional vitamins or supplements – unless otherwise stated by your veterinarian. Most premium domestic animal foods contain all the necessary nutrients needed, and if you feel unsure on which brand or variant is best for your four-legged friend, you can always consult your vet before making a choice. We cannot stress enough that whenever it comes to your pet's diet – even if you are going to switch to or from raw foods – speak to your vet beforehand.

2. Pet-proof your home

Whether your cat likes chewing on plants or your puppy enjoys gnawing on remote controls, shoes or wires, pet-proofing your home will offer added safety to both you and your four-legged friend. Remember to always keep trash cans covered, medicine in high places and add childproof latches on cabinets to stop cats from prying them open.

3. Start training early on

You don't have to wait until your dog is older to start teaching him how to walk on a leash. It's never too early either to teach your pet basic commands such as stay, sit or come. Starting early will benefit you both for years to come as it will also help to improve communication between you and your companion.

4. Do not overlook grooming

Grooming your pet is extremely important. While short-haired breeds might only need brushing once a week, long-haired ones need more attention. Give cats and dogs the time to feel comfortable around grooming tools – brushes might be intimidating for younger animals. If you do not feel confident enough to clip your pet's nails yourself, it would be best to book an appointment with a professional groomer.

5. Never skip vet visits

Just like us, animals need to get regular checkups to ensure that they're at their healthiest. It is recommended to book a vet visit at least once a year to ensure that your pet is happy and healthy.
