How to Find the Right Kind of Mattress

Types of mattresses

Mattress firmness

The firmness is usually ranked between 1 to 10, with 10 being very firm. Firmness doesn’t mean support, as support is adjusted to a person individually and depends on the weight and sleeping position. Usually, preferred firmness is between 4 and 7, however, it’s a personal preference. There are mattresses which have so called universal comfort and thanks to its layers can adjust to different weights and sleeping positions.


Sleeping position

Depending on your preferred sleeping position you can have some back and joints problems. It’s very important to choose the right mattress to support your spine and neck during the night.


Back - for those sleeping on their back the best solution is firm mattress which can support the spine. On the scale from 1 to 10, the right firmness would be between 4 and 7, depending on your preferences.

Side - for side sleepers the best option is mattress with soft to medium firmness, which can adjust to their body curves, relieve the pressure on the neck and support the back. Recommended firmness is between 3 to 6 and usually advised mattress is memory foam.

Stomach - while sleeping on the stomach, our body needs extra support to avoid sinking of the torso and keeping the back straight. For this purpose, the best mattresses are the firm ones, from 5 to 7. The mattress should be also as flat as possible, with a flat pillow, not to cause neck pressure.


Size

Sizes might slightly vary, depending on the country of import. In general, you can find Small Single, which is the smallest size with 75 x 190 cm. Single mattress have measurements of 90 x 190 cm. Double sizes can be either 120 x 190 cm or 135 cm x 190 cm. Kingsize mattress has 150 x 200 cm and super kingsize 180 x 200 cm, also known as queen size. When to replace your mattress

It very much depends on the quality of your old mattress. Good-quality mattresses can last even up to 15 years, however, it’s advised to inspect it after 7 years. Good signs for changing your mattress is back pain, joints pain and poor-quality sleep. Over time, mattresses lose their ability to support the body, hence, you start to experience discomfort and pain.


Try before you buy

Never buy a mattress you didn’t lay on. Even if you do your online research and find the right type and firmness to your sleeping position and weight, you still need to check if you’re comfortable and if this mattress makes you feel cozy. You’re going to spend between 6 to 8 hours in bed every day and a good mattress can serve you well for years. Make sure you test it well before a purchase. Don’t only sit on it, take your shoes off and lay down, change positions and check if everything suits you. You will be spending a lot of money on it, make sure it’s a responsible purchase.


Budget

Always keep in mind to get the best value for any money spent. However, don’t try to save money on your mattress.
