Kitchen can be the heart of a house. Regardless of how much time you spend there, every kitchen needs to be functional and make you feel good and comfortable. Because it’s an expensive purchase, make sure you make the right decision and you can enjoy it for the years to come.

Set up a budget

Before any purchase plan how much you are willing to spend on your new kitchen. However, keep into consideration any additional costs that might come along the way, such as all kitchen appliances, installations and additional features you might need. Ask for detailed specifications to know exactly how much you are spending on particular features and to be able to avoid hidden costs.

Measurements

Take your measurements very carefully as the whole look of your kitchen will depend on it. Before the final purchase this should be checked again by a professional to ensure the kitchen will fit perfectly. However, first plan the look based on the measurements and how much space you can use.

Visualisation

Ask a company if they can provide you with a visualisation of your future kitchen. You can have a better idea how functional it will be and how the final outcome will look like.

Ask questions

If you have any doubts or are unsure about any detail, ask. Any changes after your kitchen is installed can be very costly and you don’t want to be stuck for years with something you don’t like or is not functional. Ask your salesperson to walk you through all the details about your chosen kitchen and don’t shy away to ask as many questions as you need.

Childproof

Regardless if you need it now or might need it in the future, think in advance about childproofing your kitchen. It might be much easier to do it while planning a new kitchen, than childproofing existing one.

Guarantee

Ask about available guarantee and what it includes. Make sure terms and conditions are clear and easy to understand. Check how long the company has been around because if it opened up a year ago it might make you think twice and ask if they offer any guarantee.

Value for money

Don’t overspend but don’t be cheap. A good-quality kitchen will serve you for the years to come. If you invest in good materials you won’t have to replace anything for a long time. Spend more on quality not style, and make sure that what looks good is also made from durable material.

Consider different styles

Before you set your mind on something, have a good research about kitchen styles. You might already be into something, but check other similar options to have a broader perspective. After all, you can mix and match as you please. You can mix contemporary kitchen with modern and industrial accents. Or classic look with shabby chic additions. Explore all possibilities to be sure you can find the one suiting you best.

Check materials

Make sure the material of your kitchen is appropriately thick, whatever it is. Colours of the back and front of the cabinet doors should match, it will not only have esthetical value but can give you an idea about the quality of the material. Ask about the origins of the material, especially when it comes to wood.

Extra features

Think if you need any extra features for your kitchen. For example anti-slam drawers to avoid any potential damaging. Pay attention how the system is called, anti-slam drawers will close themselves slowly, soft close plungers, on the other hand, will just stop a drawer from slamming. Consider if you want your kitchen appliances built-in or freestanding. If you prefer built-in, you should plan in advance where to put them and how do you want the cover to look like. If your current appliances are still in good shape you can just built them in and choose matching cover.

Take your time to decide

A good-quality kitchen will serve you well for years. Don’t make a rushed decision and make a purchase the same day. Give yourself some time to decide and consider different options. If you set your mind on something you will still be able to purchase it a week later and at least you will give yourself enough time be sure it’s the best option from all your possibilities.

Installation

Ask the salesman if installation of your kitchen is provided and how much does it cost. If not, ask if they can direct you to an experienced handyman who can help you with the assemble. If you prefer to do it yourself choose rather built-up carcasses than flat-packed to save yourself time and hassle.
