Learning to drive can be both exciting and terrifying for many people. Choosing the right motoring school can not only make the process much easier but also help to accelerate it and passing the exam at the first take.

Pass rate

Ask for average pass rate and how many lessons are usually needed before taking the exam. Although everyone learns at own speed however, this can give you an idea of how efficient the school is. You can also ask around about the school’s reputation and if past students were satisfied with it.

Lessons

Ask about the duration of the lesson, is there any mileage limit and how much time will you spend driving? Can an instructor pick you up and drive to a preferred location, for example after work or school? Finally, will there be someone else in the car? If you mind sharing a car with another learner ask in advance whether you can have individual lessons. Make sure the quality and time of the lesson are good value for money. Spending more on a lesson might save you money in the long run. If an instructor is good and can prepare you for the exam better and faster you might end up saving money.

Fleet

Depending on which category you’re applying for, ensure the vehicle is in good condition and matches your preferences. You should be able to choose between manual and automatic car. Cars should be fully functional, without any technical problems.

The right instructor

The most important part of the learning process is the right instructor. Choose a person who suits your needs and with whom you feel fully comfortable. Regardless if you prefer someone more energetic who can motivate you, or rather a calm and patient person who gives you more space, you should simply like the person who teaches you. Apart from personality traits, all instructors should be experts in their field and be able to teach you not only how to drive correctly, but also teach you all about road behaviour and safety rules.

Categories

Different types of vehicles require an additional permit. Standard categories recognized in the European Union are A for motorcycles, B for vehicles not exceeding 3500 kg, C for large goods vehicles and D for passengers buses. Each category has addition subcategories for specific vehicles. Choose a motor school which can provide needed vehicle with an experienced instructor.

Theory test

Ask about theory lessons you can receive at the driving school and how many hours are dedicated to that. Also, check if the school will provide any learning materials and sample tests helping you to prepare for your exam. The instructor should give a thorough explanation about all road’s behaviours. However, your driving lessons shouldn’t be spent in a parked car listening instead of practising.

Learner’s permit

Before starting the lessons and applying for theory and practical test you need a Learner’s Permit obtained at the Transport authority. List of documents needed is available at the Government website. Ask at the school if it offers help with the application process.
