4 Idyllic Hiking & Swimming Trails In Malta
by Chiara Micallef
While hikes and long walks are a pretty amazing way to get some fresh air, this stifling weather can turn hiking into a quasi-torturous activity. So in order for us not to give up on lush countryside walks, we've compiled a list of summer-friendly hikes. These trails all end up by the sea, which means that you can get a much-deserved refreshing splash after your long and tiring walk.
1. Bahrija to Golden Bay
This trail starts at the Bahrija Parish church and is speckled with beautiful sights and spots in the area. Thanks to this lovely walk, you will be able to enjoy scenic views of Fomm ir-Rih, the Fomm ir-Rih Cart Ruts and Rdum l-Imdawwar. You can shorten this hike by stopping at Gnejna, Qarraba Bay or Ghajn Tuffieha Bay.
2. Comino
A hiking trip to Comino is the ultimate experience for any budding adventurer. The island is full of natural wonders, pretty sights and a fascinating lizard colony. Since Comino is surrounded by sea, it's super easy to find a quiet spot away from visitors.
3. Torri l-Ahmar to Slugs Bay
The walk from Torri l-Ahmar to Slugs Bay is a relatively short one but still filled with wonder and awe to behold – such as the historic WWII beach posts and the breathtaking vantage points. If you would like to take a longer route, you can stretch out this hike onto Rdum l-Ahmar, Coral Lagoon and White Tower Bay.
4. Xemxija To Mistra
Starting at the Xemxija Hill Heritage Walk, this lovely route will give you glimpses of Malta's colourful past. It is riddled with punic tombs, caves, a semi-intact Roman road and well-preserved Roman Baths. On your way to Mistra bay, you can stop for a quick dip at the wondrous Hofra.
