If you haven't done it before you might not really know who you need to call and what you need to take in consideration before hiring a skip. Here are a few things you should know before you make that call.

  • Prepare for your skip rental

Before you even make the call you need to prepare yourself and think about where the skip will have to be placed. Most of all you need to think about the location and whether or not it is even possible to rent a skip. For example, if your premises happen to be on a narrow one-way road, this may prove to be quite a problem and it is something you should discuss with the company you will be contacting. That is also when you think about the second important factor.

  • Permits before you hire a skip

More often than not the skip that you rent will either take road space, pedestrian space or a parking space. This means that before you even think about a skip you need to make sure that it is possible for you to get a permit for the location. Some companies will take care of this for you, which can prove to be ideal because in that case you would not have to deal with it yourself and that is another thing off your plate.

  • Sizes of skips to choose from

It is important that you think about the items that you will be disposing of because this will determine the size of the skip. There are various sizes that one could choose from and it all depends on what it will be used for. When there are house renovations to be done and only a few items will be thrown, maybe garden waste, or small litter, a small one can be ideal. You do not want to be paying for a bigger one when you will not be needing that much space. On the other hand you do not want to choose a small one and then have to order a whole new other one just because what you disposed of did not fit. In cases where there is major renovations and building materials as well as furniture needs to be thrown into the skip, the bigger ones are the right option.

  • Types of skips

Moreover, other than sizes there are also various types of skips that you can rent. Again, depending on the items to be disposed of in the skip, you can choose from skips that are open, skips that can be opened by the side and also skips that can be closed. The latter ones are ideal for those who do not wish passers-by to be using their skip as a free litter area.

  • Hazardous waste that should not be disposed in these kinds of skips

Another important thing you should know is that just because you are paying for this big skip that is there just for you, it does not mean that you can throw whatever you wish in it. There are various types of waste that cannot be disposed of in a normal skip and you need to make sure to adhere to these rules. Items such as asbestos, tyres, oil, batteries, monitors, fluorescent tubes, fridges, paint (not even paint tins that are empty), medical waste, gas cylinders, liquids, petrol or diesel, explosives and plasterboards. However the list may not be limited to just these items, to be sure you need to ask the company that you have contacted for a full list.

  • Prepare for the skip delivery

Now that all that has been taken care of, it will be time for delivery. You need to make sure that before the skip is delivered the space where you need it located will be vacated and you leave exact, and correct, instructions as to where you want the skip to be placed. Preparing beforehand and being exact with your instructions will eliminate downtime and will help to smooth things along.
