Forklifts as machinery undergo a great amount of stress. This means that one needs to perform a number of checks on them in order to ensure a safe, efficient and productive operation. Safety should always be your number one priority when operating one of these machines, whether you are inside or outdoors, it is best to perform these four vital checks before operating any forklift.

1. Visual checks

Prior to operating your forklift, it is best to give it a visual check. This check entails figuring out whether there are any cuts or gouges in your tyres, ensuring that no cables or wires are loose or exposed and making sure that the seatbelt is working the way it should be. Other visual checks include fluid levels, check oil, water and fluid before operating your machinery, along with fork and mast damages.

2. Physical checks

Your next step is to ensure that the forklift is working in an appropriate manner. These checks should be carried out on brakes, by making sure that they are in a stellar working condition. You should also check the forks – these are the most important part of the forklift, so make sure that they are not bent or damaged. Be mindful when it comes to mirrors and seating positions, as comfort should be one of the top priorities when it comes to avoiding physical injuries.

3. Auditory checks

It is imperative for your horn to work. The horn will mostly be used in areas where people or other machinery is present, in order to alert others of your presence. This will help you make sure that no accidents involving pedestrians or other equipment take place. A sturdy horn will allow you to give a heads up to anyone around you. Listen closely to your forklift, if there are any unusual sounds, it is best to check them out and refrain from using the machinery until all issues are resolved.

4. Safety gear checks

When operating a forklift, one should always wear protective clothing. To ensure safe use, it is important to wear proper safety clothing that will help you ensure that you will not get injured while operating this piece of machinery. A number of appropriate safety clothing for forklift operators include visibility jackets, sturdy safety shoes and a hard hat.
