Springtime in Malta is a heavenly period. Animals that hibernate or hide during winter begin to wake from their slumber, leaves start to unfold and flowers begin to bloom. The natural world around us stirs from its deep wintery sleep and birdsong can be heard almost anywhere.

Spring is a great time to get some much-needed sunshine and explore Malta's natural beauty. Here are five enchanting things to look forward to this spring.

1. Blooming Flowers

From pretty toadflaxes to coastal shrubs and eye-catching poppies, you can spot heaps of colourful floral species across the islands during this time of the year. Spring is the best time in Malta to enjoy the blooming beauties that our land is blessed with.

2. It's Finally Getting Warmer

The weather is finally warm enough for us to put away our shawls and thick jackets, however, it's still not hot enough to steer clear from sunny spots. This warm weather gives us an excuse to head out for a walk, hang out at the beach or visit some outdoor historical spots across the island

3. Migrating Birds

Many bird species migrate annually from one country to another, making Malta and Gozo their stop midway through their journey. If you're lucky enough, you can catch a glimpse of anything from herons to warblers, water rails and flycatchers.

4. Endemic Species

Ok so lizards and geckos can be found pretty much anywhere in Malta, however, you're more likely to run into them – and chameleons during spring. You might also be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the Maltese weasel or the Maltese freshwater crab.

5. Gardening

While we have to wait another month or so to plant certain seeds, spring gives us a great excuse to start planning our outdoor areas. Whether you are looking for an evergreen balcony, a small vegetable patch or a modest herb garden, the time to start planting your seeds is almost with us.
