Before the advent of Christmas, the singing of carols and the tradition associated with it came about through the celebration of pagan festivals. The word 'carol' itself stems from the Ancient Greek word 'choraulein' which, translated into English, means 'an ancient circle dance performed to flute music'. 

Rather than banning the songs entirely, early Christians decided to weave Christian songs into the pagan tradition and, after initially decreasing in popularity, the tradition became popular once more once songs began to be written in the local people's language.

The Maltese language was no exception, including several Christmas carols that, to this day, bring about immeasurable joy to their listeners during the festive season.
