Over the past few days Malta has been giving off pre-apocalyptic vibes — it was reported that protective face masks ran out of stock all over the island. Not to mention the fact that supermarkets and grocery stores are now officially more chaotic than ever, to say the least.

People have been rushing to purchase a number of supplies in order to survive the  CoronaVirus epidemic.

This quasi-helter skelter has not only introduced a flush of panic-induced shopping, but low stocks for a number of products all over the country.

So what are the staple foods that you really need to stock up on, if Malta ever gets hit by an epidemic?

1. Flour

This magical ingredient will not only last for years if preserved well, but it has been a staple 'survival' food for as long as humans have been around. Thanks to this superfood you can create a number of essential dishes, including crackers and unleavened bread.

2. Dried Goods

Raisins, cranberries, pineapples, coconuts and nuts are a great way to keep your vitamin levels in check during an epidemic. Fruit is a great source of antioxidants and fibre — even in dried forms. Fruits are pretty much essential when it comes to keeping your brain functioning properly.

3. Canned Food

Canned goods can literally save your life. These bad boys have a long-lasting expiration date, meaning that you can eat them in a couple of years' time without any issue. Everything from corned beef to canned peaches can sustain you for quite some time.

4. Oats

Rolled oats are great. They can be turned into a number of filling treats and dishes. They're an excellent source of fibre and protein, and go well in both savory and sweet dishes. When stored correctly, oats can last for up to three years. Did we already mention how delicious they are?

5. Beef Jerky

Portable, tasty and chock-full of protein, this wonderfood can present you with the perfect pick-me-up if the epidemic ever hits the island. It's also one of the few meats which you can store over a long period of time.

6. Honey

Honey is a great sweetener. The expiration date one finds on honey generally refers to its crystallisation date, however that can be easily solved by heating up the honey, this will transform those pesky crystals into good old honey in no time.

7. Rice

Rice is a filling basic food, it is proven that it can last for anywhere around 25 to 30 years when uncooked and stored in a proper manner. Rice is a high-density, high-calorie food — meaning that it will sustain you and your family for quite some time.
