Feeling Distracted? Here Is How You Can Focus Better When Working From Home

Working from home has become the new normal due to the current coronavirus epidemic. Teleworking holds many advantages, however, it can be difficult for some to adjust to this new kind of normal.

Not having to deal with daily headaches such as morning commutes and evening traffic is pretty neat, however, being productive and resisting distractions can be particularly difficult. Here is how you can focus better when working from home.

1. Set a schedule

Whether you prepare an hourly schedule, or a to-do list, the important thing is that you stick to it. Create a priority list before you take on any other tasks. There is no need to over-schedule yourself, however, having a set of tasks that you need to accomplish will definitely help keep you on track. Time yourself on each task and set up an activity log. Over time, this activity log will help you identify at which times you are most productive, meaning that you can work on the most complex activities during those hours. Cross things off as you go, as this will give you a better sense of accomplishment.

2. Set boundaries

Set up boundaries that will help you switch in and out of your working schedule. Make sure that your work time does not overlap with your free time – and vice versa. This will help both in terms of productivity and can also prevent conflicts among family members.

However, creating boundaries is not only about not being distracted by family or friends – keep away from social media, browsing and online shopping too – which brings us to the next point.

3. Keep distractions at bay

Social media, television and your phone count as distractions. Turn off any notifications that are not related to work. Do not keep your Facebook tab open as this will only fuel your need to take a peek every now and then – a peek which can easily turn into a whole hour.

Children can distract you when working from home, and even though you need to set up boundaries with them as well, don't be too rigid. Working from home means that you will be able to spend more quality time with your family – something which you probably did not have much time for in the past.

4. Get dressed for work

Do not be tempted to roll out of bed and straight into your working space wearing your pyjamas. By 'get dressed for work' we do not mean putting on a suit. Simply changing into a pair of joggers can help shift your mindset into a more productive one. This will also avoid any awkwardness if you have any meetings set up for the day.

5. Create an 'office space'

This is not the easiest tip on the list. Most of us do not really have any extra room to spare – try your best to choose a quiet area that can be cleared up from any distractions.

A clean workspace will help you focus and feel more structured. If you are working from your kitchen table or living room, remove any work-related stuff after you are done. Leaving any work-related items in sight might make it difficult for you to 'switch off'.
