October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and here in Malta we are once again joining forces with the international community to highlight its importance. Pink October is a special month during which both men and women get an important reminder about how crucial it is to get their breasts checked on a regular basis for breast cancer screenings and early detection.

Pink October reminds us that breast cancer has no gender, race or religion – we are all in the fight against this life-threatening disease together. It starts primarily by raising awareness about the importance of knowing the symptoms, leading a healthier lifestyle and practising prevention tips that could all lessen the possibility for breast cancer to develop. Although raising awareness about breast cancer puts women at centre stage, men too are prone to be affected.

That's why in this article, you will find a list of symptoms for both men and women, prevention and a list of resources that includes support groups and clinics that offer breast cancer screening.

Symptoms Both Men And Women May Experience

  • A painless lump or thickening in your breast or underarm tissue
  • Nipple discharge or crusting. This can include blood
  • Change in the size, shape or appearance of your breast skin or areola (including peeling, scaling, dimpling, puckering, flaking, pigmentation or redness)
  • A newly inverted nipple
  • Pain, irritation or swelling of the breast

Can You Prevent It?

Most people are genetically predisposed to this type of cancer, however, there are a number of steps you can take in order to reduce your risk or prevent it.

  • Conduct self-exams
  • Discuss breast cancer screening exams and tests with your doctor. You can go over the benefits and risks of screening, with your GP in order to further educate yourself
  • Limit the amount of alcohol you consume
  • Exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, a few days a week
  • Maintain a healthy weight. You can ask your GP for healthy-eating strategies
  • Include more plant-based foods such as fruit, vegetables, legumes, nuts and whole grains in your diet. Opt for healthier fats like fish and olive oil.

If you are looking for support, resources or guidance, or you would also like to donate to the cause, you can visit Action for Breast Cancer or Hospice Malta.
