Movember is here, and it's not just about growing a moustache. With this month comes male health awareness for mental health, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer. The global cause of Movember is focused on raising awareness, encouraging men, and reminding them about the importance of having regular check-ups to prevent or treat an illness. With the many changes going on in today's world, men's health should be a priority. In this article, we'll be focusing on male health awareness and the prevention of prostate and testicular cancers, along with a list of resources that includes support groups and further reading.

Prostate Cancer

  • Risk increases with age
  • Second most common cancer in men
  • Men of African or Caribbean descent are more prone to develop it
  • Get tested if you are over 45 years of age

Symptoms

It is important to note that not everyone experiences the same symptoms

  • Frequent pain or stiffness in the upper thighs, lower back and hips
  • Painful ejaculation
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • A need to urinate frequently
  • Weak or interrupted urine flow
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Difficulty having an erection

Prevention

As mentioned before, some men are genetically predisposed to get this type of cancer. These include race, age and even genetic predisposition. However, there are still a number of steps that you can take in order to reduce your risk or detect it early on.

  • Choose a healthy diet
  • Exercise most days of the week
  • Educate yourself and speak to your doctor
  • Stop smoking
  • Get checked frequently

Testicular Cancer

Testicular cancer is one of the most common cancers in males aged 15-40 years. The best you can do is a self-check exam on a regular basis.

Symptoms

It is important to note that not everyone experiences the same symptoms

  • Changes in size or shape
  • Lumps or thickenings in the area
  • Aches and pains in the abdomen or groin area
  • Pain or discomfort in the testicles or scrotum

Risk Factors

  • Testicular cancer is more common in white males
  • It often affects those between the ages of 15-40
  • Family history of testicular cancer
  • Undescended testes

Mental Health

Mental health has a lot of stigma around it, especially for men. The fear of speaking up can stem from a range of societal pressure.

Address the root of the issue and create a healthy and comforting space for yourself and your friends where dialogues can be addressed in a non-stigmatised manner. Remember that lately, life has changed drastically for many – Covid has increased feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Being present for your friends, checking in on them and providing an understanding and non-judgemental space is a great start, and may mean a lot to someone.
