Nature on the Maltese island

If you're a Maltese history buff who loves outdoor adventures, wondrous structures and long walks speckled with historical spots, this article was written just for you. Buckle up and start planning your next outdoorsy weekend trip with this article on five historical spots around Malta and Gozo.

1. Santa Verna

The Santa Verna site in Xaghra is a 5000-year-old structure close to the Sant' Anton Chapel. Even though the structure is a modest-sized one, the walk to and from the area is one that will help you relax and unwind like no other.

2. Victoria Lines

Everyone is familiar with this famous structure built by the British in 1897. The Victoria Lines however are not impressive just because they can provide you with a killer glute workout. This structure starts in Madliena and goes on all the way to Fomm ir-Rih bay. Along the way, you will stumble upon a number of forts, batteries and redoubts, making this one of the most rewarding walks on the list.

3. Tal-Bakkari

If you are looking for a long and all-encompassing walk, this one is the perfect choice for you. In the tal-Bakkari area of Zurrieq, one can find an array of ruins that include chapels, towers and a Punic-Roman temple.

4. Ghajn Hadid Tower

Ghajn Hadid Tower can be found in the midst of Selmun. An open space that was once occupied by the British but was reclaimed by nature over the years. Along the path towards Ghajn Hadid, one can stumble upon a number of historical gems, including the Selmun Palace and the Ahrax Tower.

5. Ghar il-Kbir

This wondrous cave is a favourite among many locals. Misrah Ghar il-Kbir is an area in the limits of Dingli where one can find a series of caves where it is said that troglodytes used to reside for several centuries. In the area, one can also find the Clapham Junction cart ruts. If you fancy a more lengthy walk, you can visit Buskett Gardens or Dingli Cliffs.
