Red Tower in Mellieha

Whether you're looking for your next hiking spot or a historical adventure around the Maltese islands, this article was written just for you. Here are six beautiful outdoor historical spots around Malta and Gozo.

1. Xemxija Apiaries

These apiaries date back to the Roman period — just like the road one needs to take to arrive at this historical site. The apiaries and the Roman road both form part of the Xemxija Heritage Trail, which is made up of numerous Punic tombs and a thousand-year-old carob tree.

2. Cittadella

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a true wonder to behold – built on a hill overlooking Gozo and surrounded by lush countryside, this old fortified city is full of wonders. The Cittadella's fortifications are built on a natural plateau, and in this city, one can find several demi-bastions, a wondrous cathedral and the Old Prison.

3. St. Mary's Chapel, Bir Miftuh

The chapel of Santa Marija in Bir Miftuh was built in the 15th century and is located in the village of Gudja. What makes this building special is the fact that it is one of the best-preserved chapels on the island from the era. This lovely chapel is surrounded by beautiful olive trees, and one can also find a small picnic area in the vicinity.

4. Lunzjata Chapel, Zurrieq

This Medival chapel in the limits of Zurrieq shows off striking architectural features – such as the aesthetically particular apse. Numerous archaeological artefacts were unearthed around this site, including medieval coins and pottery shards.

5. Gozo Aqueduct

This aqueduct connecting Kercem to Victoria was built by the British in the 19th century to serve as a means of water transport from Ghar Ilma to the Cittadella. While nowadays it is unused and in ruins, some of its arches remain standing.

6. St. Agatha's Tower, Mellieha

Known as the Red Tower, this large Mellieha-based watchtower was built back in the 17th century to a design by Antonio Garsin. This tower is not only famous for its colour, but also for the fact that it overlooks Mellieha Bay, and provides clear views of both Gozo and Comino.
