Proper waste management can not only save you money and hassle but also have a positive impact on the environment. Create your own waste recycling scheme and commit to eco-friendly and cost-efficient solutions, you can successfully do it in just a few steps.

Legal obligations

Each company in Malta has an obligation to recycle electrical and packaging waste. Apart from that paper, glass, metal, any other recyclable materials, and any hazardous waste need to be disposed in a safe manner. If you are not sure what are the specific needs of waste management for your company you can consult with a specialist. Waste management companies offer consulting services with schemes adjusted to individual needs.

Waste recycling scheme

You might want to apply for a suitable scheme, to adjust your needs to low costs. Depending on the amount of waste you’re producing, you can have a pickup everyday or few times a week. Talk to a specialist and ask for an advice about how you should recycle your waste and how to manage it in the best manner. Choose a company which can fulfill your needs, especially if you’re producing large amount of waste. Make sure the company has high standards and is committed to recycle.

Recycling

Think Bigger! Segregate more than just waste and recycling paper, metal and glass. Try donating usable old furniture, mattresses or any appliances to charity organizations rather than disposing them. When purchasing products, look for eco-friendly and durable solutions. Less waste means lower costs and cleaner environment.

Hazardous waste

If you produce any hazardous waste you have the obligation to dispose it in a proper manner. Look for a company who can do it in the safest manner possible and provide you with all the necessary documentation you might need later on. Keep in mind that hazardous waste need to be disposed in line with EU directives. If you don’t know how to dispose it, ask a competent company to walk you through the process and provide assistance in choosing the most cost effective solution.

Electrical waste (WEEE)

Electrical and electronic equipment, regardless if dumped in bulk or not, has to be properly recycled. If an equipment has wires, needs charging, batteries or has the logo of crossed-out bin, it can’t be thrown into the garbage. Because of materials used, electrical waste is very dangerous for the environment. It’s predicted that by 2020, the earth will have more than 12 million tons of electrical waste. Therefore, it’s important to recycle all electronic materials to decrease the environment and health dangers.

End of Life Vehicle

All owners of end of life vehicles have to present the certificate of destruction to de-register a vehicle. Such document can be only obtained at an approved destruction facility. Some car brands offer services of scrapping ELV, otherwise, you will have to find the right facility to do it yourself. Ensure your car will be properly recycled and all the documentations received should be presented to the Transport authority.

Involve employees

The rule says it’s always easier to minimise waste than recycle. Ask your staff to use materials responsibly and reuse things that are still functional. Provide recycling bins which are easily reached and encourage employees to use them. Reusing materials and saving paper should not be perceived as being cheap but environmentally responsible. Make recycling part of your Corporate Social Responsibility and show your customers you’re cautious about the future of our planet.

Bins

To emphasize correct waste management, purchase enough amount of recycling bins and situate them in convenient points. Adjust sizes of bins to the needs of your environment. You can find bins with specially shaped lids to prevent people from dumping wrong type of waste.
