Summer is almost here, however that does not mean that we need to give up our hiking shoes just yet – the numerous hiking routes in the South of Malta are still extremely inviting for hiking enthusiasts. While at this time of year the spaces are not as green, these beautiful spots still deserve to be explored. If you are looking for your next adventure, check out these five hike trails in the south of Malta.

1. Tas-Silg

Around the Delimara and Hofriet coastline, one can enjoy amazing scenery, along with the Tas-Silg archaeological site. You can start off this hike at Tas-Silg near the chapel, and walk on through the meandering country road that leads to the Nature Trust Malta park and onto Xrobb l-Ghagin, St Peters Pool and Kalanka Bay. Alternatively, you can turn towards the Delimara peninsula where you can find Fort Delimara and Fort Tas-Silg. If you keep on following the coastline, you will stumble upon a great vantage point that will give you a stellar view of the Marsascala cliffs.

2. Wied Qirda

This Zebbug hike trail will take you along several pretty spots around the area, including the Milorda memorial, Ghar Hanzir and Wied Qirda. You can start this trail from Qormi or Siggiewi as well, depending on your preference. This lovely walk can also lead you to Wied Hesri in Siggiewi, another beautiful route you should consider for your next trekking adventure.

3. Hal Millieri

The Hal Millieri walk is a mixture of rural and urban – but that does not make it any less worth visiting. Mqabba, Qrendi and Zurrieq are three of the most picturesque villages in Malta and this trail will surely offer you a myriad of charming sights to behold.

The trail starts from the Mqabba parish church where you can find a trail map detailing several spots such as Tal-Minttna Catacombs. When proceeding to Hal Millieri through the countryside you will stumble upon picturesque medieval chapels and the ruins of the old main square.

4. Zurrieq

Zurrieq is one of the oldest towns on the southwest coast of Malta, making it one of those spots that really has a lot to offer. While architecturally it's a lush and wondrous place, Zurrieq also holds beautiful countryside scenery and a number of historically interesting spots. From the Xarolla windmill to Punic catacombs. In total there are four windmills in the Zurrieq-Safi area, along with a lush valley and heaps of scenic wayside roads.

5. St. Thomas Bay

This scenic route starts off along the rocky St. Thomas beach and takes you all the way to the lovely cliffs of Marsascala. If you are feeling adventurous, you can go ahead and stretch this walk to Xghajra. Along the way, you can stumble upon a number of pretty spots, including the Zonqor Battery and St Thomas Tower. Alternatively, if you walk in the opposite direction you can make it to St. Peter's pool and Ras il-Fniek in Delimara. This trail can be done in addition to the Tas-Silg to Delimara trail mentioned above.
