Animal Rescue Services in Malta & Gozo

With the aim to promote and safeguard the welfare of unwanted, abandoned, abused or stray pets, rescue groups dedicate their time and resources towards providing housing, nutrition, medical care, as well as love and interaction to these animals, improving considerably their life. Run by volunteers and a handful of professionals, the majority are dedicated towards pet adoption, ensuring that they are sent to a good home.

What type of animals are rescued?

Naturally, cats and dogs are the most common type of animals saved. Some are either found wandering aimlessly around the streets where they run the risk of being hurt or even worse killed, whereas others are dropped off by their owners and abandoned because they are no longer able to take care of them. Horses are another type of animal often rescued, most especially if it is severely neglected. The sanctuary will take extra care of the animal making sure it regains its strength and health before it is rehomed, hopefully to its forever home.

Yet, domesticated pets are not the only animals saved. A rescue service for wild animals such as turtles, hedgehogs, bats, snakes and marine animals like dolphins is also available locally. Headed by a team of rescuers, vets, divers and marine biologists, these individuals assist animals in distress by identifying what the problem is and offering the necessary help.  Furthermore, Malta's location right in the middle of the Mediterranean sea means that several migratory birds either fly over the island or land on our shores. At times, these are illegally shot down and as a result, they get injured. This service consists of a small bird rehabilitation hospital where all kinds of birds are treated predominantly for this type of injuries. Once they have been nursed back to health, they are released to the wild.

What services are offered by animal rescue services in Malta?

As mentioned earlier on, one of the primary goals of local rescue services is to take care of unwanted pets and to make sure they get rehomed. However, other important services are also on hand. Inspections and enforcement are also part and parcel of their rescue operations, hence, any reports that involve lack of proper welfare conditions, cruelty and abandonment are dealt with. Another service provided is a 24/7 animal ambulance that helps in assisting sick or injured stray animals, particularly those involved in accidents. In such instances, the team will try to identify whether the animal has an owner and whether it is microchipped. If the former cannot be identified, then the animal is regarded as a stray and is taken in for shelter or treatment if needed. Do note that this service is not offered for privately owned pets.

What can you do to help?

If you're deeply concerned about the plight of these animals, there are a number of things you can do to actively make a difference. Bearing in mind that one of the primary concerns of these services is to rehome these abandoned animals, you may decide to adopt one yourself. Dogs and cats are all neutered, chipped and vaccinated, while they are regularly checked by a vet. This means that you can rest assured that the pet you are about to adopt is happy and healthy.

However, if you are unable to take a little pooch or cat home with you, you may want to volunteer for a specific association. Volunteering involves helping pets socialise with other animals whilst at the shelter, assisting with various fundraising events and helping out with adoption cases. Alternatively, you may also be asked to take dogs for their daily outdoor walks and help other members of staff with cleaning and maintenance of the premises.

Increasingly, sponsorships are on the rise whereby for a small amount of money you can sponsor a specific animal for a period of time, such as a year. This amount will help provide food, shelter and any medications needed. In addition, should you wish to, you can sponsor more than one dog or cat, while you can renew the sponsorship after the specified amount of time has elapsed. Some associations will provide you with a sponsorship certificate and photos of your little fairy friend, while it goes without saying that you can visit your sponsored pet whenever you please as long as it is during the association's opening hours. Keep in mind that some are open on a daily basis, however, others welcome guests by appointment, whereas others are open on Saturdays and Sundays.

Lastly, any donation be it small or big is of utmost help to rescue services. Donations can be made either in person or by post, as well as via bank transfer. Some associations also have a donate button on their website which offers a secure method of payment. Having said that, donations need not be solely monetary. For instance, some companies may ask for items such as bedding and food, as well as equipment that will help with the good running order of the premisses such as floor washing detergents and shavers for taking care of grooming the animals.

Are you ready to adopt a pet?

Step into any animal shelter or association and you'll be instantly welcomed with a bunch of enthusiastic puppies, kittens and adult animals that are truly hard to resist. However, adopting one is no easy task since you need to consider a number of things before taking such an important decision. For instance, you need to make sure your priorities are set right and that you are fully aware of the reasons as to why you would like to adopt a pet. You must also consider your circumstances by asking yourself certain questions such as whether you have enough time to look after your new occupant, whether you spend long hours are work or you are required to travel abroad often and whether you have sufficient space for the dog or cat in your house. Lastly, remember that with good care, love and attention both dogs and cats can live 12 to 15 years so you must bear in mind this commitment.

If you're unsure as to which animal is ideal for your situation, you can always get advice from the staff. With a wealth of knowledge, these individuals do not only have the necessary know-how, but they also know the cats and dogs available quite well, so they will be able to find you the perfect match for your needs and circumstances.
